College of Western Idaho Master Plans

Founded in 2009, the College of Western Idaho is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the U.S.; yet, with only one building on its 150-acre campus, a comprehensive master plan was needed. The phased plan featured sustainable energy strategies and illustrated vast potential for 1.3 million sq. ft. of learning space, capable of serving a student population of 25,000. Simplified circulation patterns provided safe and inviting bike and pedestrian paths, and suggested use of an adjacent rail line added an additional transportation option. The project’s standout trait, however, was its cooperation: drawings, sketches, and models were collaboratively created by faculty, students, and the Cushing Terrell design team during six on-campus workshops.
